An e-commerce website is one that has the function to take payments for products sold online, mainly using credit cards via World Pay and PayPal. Basically, it is an online shop,
E-commerce websites can be broken down into two areas, the front-end for the customer, or the back-end for the shop owner. Each of these areas should have the following main functions:
Front End
As well as the pages of a normal website, an e-commerce site should contain:
- catalogue pages - categories of products for sale including "add to cart" button, prices, and a browse function.
- shopping cart/basket - the area where all the selected products chosen to buy are stored, along with the total amount due, and an option to "buy now".
- payment gateway - The area where the customer can choose their payment method and enter their personal/credit card details etc.
Back End
This is the site/shop owners control panel where they can login and update their shop. Main functions include:
- product details - you can add or edit product info such as photos, prices and details etc.
- Edit payment and shipping options - here, you can control what options to give your customers to make payment and how you deliver their products.
- orders section - you can sort out your customer orders in this section and arrange delivery etc.
